1. P55 PVC Dade County Feb 01
A product approval submission will be made this month for the P55 PVC roll shutter product. Due to the current strength the product it is only qualified for small missle impact applications. These applications are designated as any installation 30 ft above mean grade level. Requirements for this approval included:
- smoke density rating - 37.3 (Spec. is less than 75)
- self ignition - 890 F. (Spec. is greater than 650)
- Burn rate - 2.11 in/min (Spec. is less than 2.5in/min)
- Impact, cyclic and static dade county testing.
2. Large missile Impact - 1138ER Mar-01
One of the news members of the RAW slat family is the extruded aluminum 1138 slat. It has a 1.5 in or 38mm (for you metric buffs) coverage/pitch. It has a screw boss to allow it an additional designation as an end retention slat. We call the product the 1138 and 1138ER if screws and the sys II ER track is used. We recently shoot a narrow 37 inch 1138ER shutter with the 9lb, 35MPH large missile, and it passed with out issue.
3. Header Connection. Apr-01
I order to sign and seal a drawing for a 185 wide by 96 track height, P55 end retention, one-one storm bar shutter, the limits of our header connection were in need of verification. So we tested.
The first test used a #14 SS SMS through the SS header support bracket and die casting at the back panel into the aluminum (normally a post in this case an angle). The 500lbs/foot was applied to the ER track (in plane pulling) and then a 1,100lb header load was applied by pulling the header away from the wall (chain over a reel with weights). The connection failed before it supported any weight. I wonder how many planes the Wright brothers destroyed? So we changed from a SMS to a 1/4-20 bolt and nut.
The picture below shows the result of pulling the header away from the track using 1675lbs weight and the 500lbs in plane loading.

The Leg is broken but the header is still holding up the storm bar!
